It’s been a while, I know. This blog has sat here slowing gathering the odor of stale bread. For that I must apologize but I have good reason for not blathering my sometimes semi-enlightened thoughts onto the global stage we call the Interweb. I’ve been busy.
Yes, one of the excuses I hate the most. “I’ve been busy.” How many times a day do you hear it from friends, family, co-workers? You know what it means, you know there is a grain of truth to it, but that doesn’t really matter to you.
Why?
That’s because you’re busy too.
Instead of saying, “I forgot,” or “there were other more pressing things for me to do,” people spout this little platitude like a knee-jerk reaction when cornered. Everyone knows what it means but still they use it.
It’s not like this is a scene from A Few Good Men. We really can handle the truth…
So, let me apologize again, end that little rant, and continue on the original tangent. The last couple of months I was busy…herding cats.
No, not literally, though it may have felt like that many times. I now sport the shiny new title ‘managing editor of Alcoholmanac magazine.’ Amongst the dozen or so other responsibilities I know have to organize and keep in line writers, distributors, and other organizations in order that the magazine may, at deadline, be sent out with something more then empty nifty looking pages.
It really has been a ball so far. I’ve learned quite a bit about myself these last two months. Things like what kind of person I am, how anal retentive I can be, and the basics of people management.
You would think that all you have to do is send a few emails, make a few calls, then sit back and wait for everything to roll in, on time and ready for print. You could sit and wait for that little miracle to happen, and as the deadline closed in like a shark your hair would begin to take on a stately steel gray and your eyes would glare red from the sleepless nights.
Luckily I understand human nature a little better, though a few gray hairs did catch in my beard. My bloodshot eyes were more due to staring at the computer doing layout and editing photos then trusting people to do what they said they would.
So, herding cats is what I’ve been doing, or at least something equivalent to it. It was my first time and I loved it (mostly). With the magazine being sent out for print last night the whole cycle begins again today. Hopefully this time I’ll be able to herd a little more efficiently.
One promise I make to all of you out there who make the effort to read this blog, other then trying to make my writing funnier, more interesting, and more useful, is that I will write regularly. As to why I make that promise, well, I’ll write about that later. It’s not all altruism and personal brand building
.
If you’re wondering who the cute cat is, it’s Gato, my friend and business partner’s pet.
